It as a beautiful day for a walk through Lantheuil, so I grabbed my camera and finally photographed my new neighborhood. After living in Normandy for almost 4 months, I have learned that when a gorgeous day comes along you better take advantage of it fast!
As of 2008, there were only 664 people living within this village of 1.71 square miles. It is one of those places where the neighbors all know each other and you see them congregated outside each others homes throughout the day. Everyone is very friendly and I get smiles and nods as I pass by. I was very uncomfortable walking around since I am in my last week of pregnancy, so I was not in much of a mood to talk to anyone. I listened to my iPod and gave smiles and small waves as I went by my neighbors.
These photographs are taken in the center of Lantheuil, but there are new houses being built in the outskirts – even a new school. Those houses are not as pretty as the old ones in the center of the village. They all look alike – which is so boring. Maybe if the weather is nice again soon, I will walk around and photograph those as well. There is a nice soccer field, basketball court and tennis court about a 5 minutes walk from the center of the village. It is always empty so I take my dogs for games of fetch on the soccer field.
Lantheuil is only 15 minutes from Caen and Bayeux, and about 20 minutes from the sea. So you can experience small village life while still having the conveniences of a large city nearby. It is also a cheaper way of living near the sea. I only wish there was at least a café or some small businesses within walking distance. The nearest is in Creuilly, which is only about a 4 minute drive. I love the bakeries and the butcher over in Creuilly! Plus there is a lovely castle that is open to the public.
