Friday was a gorgeous day so we decided to take advantage of it. The sun was actually out, wind was down to a subtle breeze and the temperature was high enough so we did not need jackets. We live only 5 minutes away from Creuilly, which features a small castle that is open to the public.
The castle was built around 1050 and then modified into a fortress in 1360. Throughout the centuries it has been updated to meet the demands of that time. After living here for almost 4 months, we have yet to go investigate it. So this was the perfect day.
My husband grabbed us some baguettes (and a tarte normande for me) from a bakery in Creuilly, plus ham and some side salads at the butchers for us to have a little picnic. He came back home so we could prepare the food and then we headed out to the castle.
We were both pleasantly surprised! From the street, all you can see is a door that leads to the castle property. Once you pass this door, you cross a little metal bridge over the old moat to what feels like a sanctuary. Little birds are chirping in the trees, colorful flowers are blooming everywhere and there are cute areas to relax and sit. I cannot believe it took us this long to finally come over here!
We had the entire garden to ourselves during our lunch and only a group or two of tourists came through right afterwards. Mostly retired British tourists. After our lunch, we walked around and explored the grounds some more. The castle was converted into an art gallery that is free to the public. But it was just too beautiful outside that we did not go in.
Instead, I somehow managed to get my large 9 month pregnant butt up the high incline to reach the top story! At one point my husband was pushing me forward jokingly. The view was not spectacular, but made me feel very peaceful. The fresh air and country scenery can instantly put anyone in relax mode. There was a small group having a picnic up there with their sausage and French wine. We will try to get that spot next time! Even though, I really did enjoy our spot in the garden. Being surrounded by old stone walls and bright flowers with the sounds of nature is my idea of heaven.
If you are ever in the area, add the Château de Creuilly to your list of things to do. It will not take much of your time, but can be a peaceful break from whatever it is you are doing.
