In June, I received a review from Catherine Gervaise, an independent midwife in Aix-en-Provence. I asked her to review my book to verify facts and let me know if this is the type of book she would recommend to her patients, she wrote back “I’m so glad to have read your book. I needed it to make my life easier when conducting classes in English for patients who do not understand French, or whose husbands are poor translators. I am delighted to recommend your book to these women, for better understanding.”
But this new one is different… I finally received an in-depth review from someone who relates to my target audience. I asked Maria Babin of A Busy Bee in Paris to read my book and provide me with her opinion. She has given birth in France, is pregnant again, and speaks both languages – the perfect person to review my book. After a month of sweating, pacing the floor, and praying that my book is as good as I think it is, her review is finally here. She posted it yesterday on her blog and I am excited to share it with you (after dancing around the floor, swinging my daughter in my arms, and singing in relief). Now my daughter is nauseous, I’m tired, and life is good.
Some notable quotes by her review are:
“Carrieanne takes you by the hand through every stage of a pregnancy and explains in a crystal clear fashion and often with a touch of humor what her first French experience was like. Whether you learn from her well documented facts or from her mistakes as a first-time mom in France, after reading her book you’ll feel more confident as a mamma-to-be navigating your way through the French medical system.”
“Carrieanne is honest in her account but always respectful of cultural differences and often praises the French medical system and rightfully so! Her eagerness to understand and gain access to excellent medical care shines through and is beneficial in showing us the right attitude to adopt in order to ensure a quality experience.”
“In hindsight, I would have loved to have had this book six years ago when I first experienced having a baby in France. My experience was both difficult and beautiful, but in hindsight I realize that most of the difficulties arose from my own apprehensions, a lack of cultural understanding and not knowing what to expect. I am expecting again: a beautiful baby boy due in November and am grateful to be better prepared this time around!”
If only I had some champagne around here… I guess I will toast it with a cheap Bordeaux that has been opened for a few days – but poured in a beautiful crystal wine glass. Yep, gotta have the crystal to class it up a bit.
She provides a long review on her blog, complete with the five thing she likes best about the book.
