Right before the holidays, we decided to bring home a little Australian shepherd puppy. He’s cute, right? The photo above was taken right before we took him home from the breeder.
If you are familiar with the weather in Normandy during winter, you know that most days are gray, rainy and bone chillingly cold. We always keep a large stack of firewood right next to our poele (wood burning stove).
Brrrrrrr…… So why in the world did we get a puppy in the winter? Dang it, we forgot about potty training! Whoopsie!
Fortunately, he’s so cute and a soft bundle of love, that we can oversee this inconvenience. It’s too bad my kids sometimes oversee his puddles and track it throughout the house. I bought 12 rolls of paper towels last week, and we’re already out, not to mention we mop the floors daily.
Juliana has become an incredible help. Whenever she sees a puddle, she screams out “Jake peepee, Jake peepee.” But Mathieu sees them as an artistic opportunity to put footprints everywhere, so I must get to the puddle before him. At 18 months old, he can now outrun me, so it gets tricky.
The best is when the puppy pees on the floor as I’m getting my jacket on. Or even better, when he gets all excited to go outside. Gotta love it when he does the sneaky peeing while walking routine… as if no one will notice the string of drops on the floor. Oh, puppyhood!
If you decide to bring home a puppy, you should do it when the weather is good. This way, you can take the puppy outside every hour for long durations without cursing yourself for bringing home this little furball of joy. It’s ideal if you can leave your door open all day long, letting the puppy go in and out at his convenience. Or, even better if you don’t have two toddlers running around. Okay, I’m daydreaming a bit right now.
Winter is the worst time of year to bring home a puppy in Normandy. Lesson learned.
During this quick, 10 minute post, he’s already relieved himself.
Wish me luck!
By the way, our little furbaby’s name is Jake and he’s an amazing addition to our family.
WE LOVE YOU, JAKE. My little piddles.
