Pregnant women in France receive three ultrasounds, typically scheduled at 12, 22, an 32 weeks of pregnancy. If the doctor or midwife thinks it is necessary, you may receive more than three ultrasounds.
Social security reimburses 70% until the fifth month of pregnancy, and then ultrasounds are 100%
reimbursed. In 2012, an ultrasound in the first trimester of pregnancy costs 69 €, second trimester is 117 €, and third trimester is 106 €. So if you are in the first trimester and covered by social security, you will pay 21 €. You may be reimbursed for the full amount if you have a private health insurance.
A gynecologist or radiologist can do the three ultrasounds at 12, 22, and 32 weeks of pregnancy. Midwives can perform ultrasounds to monitor the baby’s development, but some do not take measurements of the baby or conduct certain ultrasounds. The midwives at the hospital frequently gave me ultrasounds to monitor my daughter’s progress. If a midwife sees something of concern, you will be directed to a gynecologist or doctor for further examination.
